I run VYA Service. I work with artists, musicians, wellness practitioners, and studio owners who are already booked out and already good at what they do. Their problem is never talent. Their feed just does not reflect the level of the work happening in their studio, their sessions, their tour dates.

VYA Service is not a content creation service. I do not write posts from scratch or hand people a content calendar and wish them luck. Here is why Substack matters in that process.

Instagram rewards speed. A caption gets read in three seconds and forgotten in five. There is no room there to explain how positioning works, why a small roster matters more than open booking, or what separates documentation from marketing. Substack is where I get to slow down and actually say something.

This is where the strategy lives. The platform changes, the case studies, the thinking behind a re-engagement email or a blog structure decision, the stuff that would get buried in a caption gets a full explanation here. If you run a creative business and want to understand the reasoning behind what shows up in your feed, this is where that reasoning gets written down.

I am also building this in public, in a sense. Not the highlight reel version. The actual decisions. What worked, what got scrapped, why DIY products got pulled from the store, why one post a day beats five.

Someone asks how you got started with your craft. You say “I’ve always loved it.” Then you move on. That is the moment most creators lose the sale before they knew there was one.

Your origin story is not a fun fact. It is the reason someone picks you over the ten other people doing the same work. People do not buy services. They buy the person behind them.

Why the Story Lands Before the Work Does:

A buyer on Instagram is not shopping. They are scrolling. You have two seconds to make them feel something before they keep moving.

A price list does not do that. A credential does not do that. The moment that made this real for you does.

Your story is not decoration on top of your content strategy. It is the foundation the whole thing stands on.

Start With the Moment:

Do not open with “I’ve always been passionate about this.” Nobody feels that sentence.

Start with the moment something cracked open.

The client who cried in the chair. The night you played to three people and kept going anyway. The appointment you almost cancelled and then did not.

That is your origin. Everything after it is context.

Three Questions Worth Sitting With

Write the first thing that comes up. Do not edit.

· One: What happened right before you decided to take this seriously? Not the general timeline. The specific moment.

· Two: Who was your first real piece of work made for, and why that person?

· Three: What do you want someone to feel after they leave you?

These three answers contain your story. Not your full bio. Not your resume. The thread that runs through all of it.

Go back and read what you wrote. You will find language in there that no competitor can replicate because it belongs entirely to you.

What Your Message Actually Is

You do not need a tagline. You need a consistent feeling your work creates and a clear sense of who it is for.

A tattoo artist whose work is built around grief and memory is not for the same client as one whose portfolio lives in color and celebration. Both are excellent. Neither is universal.

Knowing which one you are means you stop speaking to everyone and start speaking to the right people. That shift is where the bookings actually come from.

Where It Lives in Your Content

You do not need a dedicated highlight reel. You need your story running underneath everything you already post.

Caption about a new piece. Say why that subject matters to you personally. Behind-the-scenes clip. Say what you were thinking while you made it. New offering post. Connect it back to what drove you to build that offering. The story is not a content category. It is what makes every other category land.

The Part Nobody Says Out Loud

When your story is clear and consistent, you stop having to pitch. People arrive already convinced because they feel like they know you. Not because you showed them your stats. Because you told them the truth.

Your origin is not the marketing. It is what the marketing is built on.

Start there.

So I started to feel a weird trend in my work convos… A tattoo artist booked three months out called last week feeling invisible. A touring musician practically sold out two shows and gained almost no new followers from it. A specialized wellness practitioner with a six-week waitlist hasn’t posted since March. (!!)

Three different crafts. Same problem. The work is happening. Almost nobody outside the client list knows it.

Half the year is gone. You don’t need a spreadsheet to know if something feels off. You already know. This is just permission to actually look, and a few honest questions to ask yourself before the second half of the year runs out too. (By the way, I’m doing this too.)

Why Bother Looking Right Now?

Nobody emails you when your online presence quietly stops working. There’s no error message. Bookings just slow down a little. Referrals dry up a little. You assume it’s the season, or the algorithm, or bad luck.

Six months is enough time to tell the difference between a slow week and an actual pattern. You have that much runway behind you right now, and four months left to do something about it before the year decides for you.

Four Things Worth Actually Looking At:

Is Anyone Reacting, or Just Scrolling Past?

Scroll your last ten posts. Not the count of likes. The actual feeling of it. Are people commenting, sending it to a friend, showing up at all? Or does it land in silence every time?

Across Instagram right now, most posts barely get noticed. We’re talking under half a percent of followers actually reacting, based on Social Insider’s 2026*study of 70 million posts. That number comes from huge accounts with crowds full of strangers.

If your following is small and the people on it actually know your work, you should be doing better than that, not worse. A tight, real audience should out-react a stranger-filled one every time. If it’s backwards for you, the problem isn’t the algorithm. It’s what you’re posting and how often.

Spotting that gap takes ten minutes. Actually closing it, post after post, month after month, is a different kind of work. It’s the kind I do for every collaborator, not a one-time fix.

Do People Still Remember You Exist?

Pull up your last few emails or posts. Are the people who already love your work still hearing from you? Or have they quietly forgotten why they followed you in the first place?

This isn’t about posting constantly.

It’s about not disappearing. A collector who hasn’t seen your name in four months stops thinking of you when they’re ready to book again. Not because they stopped caring. Because you stopped showing up.

Does This Look Like One Person, or Five Different Shops?

Open your website and your Instagram side by side. Same colors? Same voice? Same person looking back at you, or does it feel like three different businesses wearing the same name?

This happens quietly. One rushed graphic here, one different caption style there, and a year later nothing matches. Nobody plans to look scattered. It just adds up.

Spotting the mismatch is a five-minute scroll. Keeping everything aligned, every week, every post, every new graphic, for the rest of the year, is the part that actually takes a steady hand on it.

What’s Draining You for Nothing?

If a stranger found your work today, with no name attached, would they know who you are and why it matters before they scrolled past?

If the answer is no, that’s not a failure. That’s just where the rest of the year goes.

This post covers what is actually different right now, why it matters, and what you do not need to panic about. I’m sharing this because I have to keep myself “In-The-Know” and don’t want you to miss anything either.

Reels can now run 20 minutes

Instagram extended Reels from 90 seconds to 20 minutes. This is a direct move against YouTube, and Instagram is not pretending otherwise. (Good for them!)

Long-form tutorials, behind-the-scenes series, and in-depth process videos are now recommended in Explore, as long as they hold attention throughout. The 20-minute ceiling does not mean 20 minutes is the goal. Completion rate still determines reach. A focused 90-second Reel with strong retention outperforms a 15-minute video people abandon two minutes in.

If your work has depth worth showing, this format is worth your attention. A tattoo session. A bodywork appointment. A studio process. These are not short stories, and now they do not have to be. (Many I chat with have waited for this!)

Your audience controls the algorithm now too

Instagram rolled out the “Your Algorithm” feature to all English-speaking users on mobile devices globally in early 2026. Every person on the app can now open their Reels settings and choose which topics they want to see more or less of. They can flag up to three top interests for the year.

This changes the game. Audiences who opt into your niche are already pre-qualified. They chose to see content like yours. Accounts that post inconsistently or across unrelated topics are now easier to opt out of.

Specificity and consistency are no longer just good advice. They are how you stay in the feed.

Hashtags are now capped at five

Instagram set a hard limit of five hashtags per post or Reel. Their reasoning: the AI-driven algorithm now determines distribution, and hashtag stacking no longer drives meaningful reach.

Data backs this up. Posts without hashtags are outperforming hashtag-heavy posts by around 23% in reach.

Use hashtags for categorization if it makes sense for your content. Do not count on them for growth.

Originality is now a scored metric

Instagram introduced an “Originality Score” that detects recycled content. Accounts that posted 10 or more reposts within 30 days were removed completely from Explore and Reels recommendations. Original creators saw reach increase 40 to 60 percent.

This applies to TikTok watermarks, CapCut logos, and cross-posted clips that have not been reworked. The algorithm reads them as recycled, and it acts accordingly.

Your raw footage, your voice, your process. That is what the platform rewards right now.

Views replaced likes as the primary metric

Instagram officially moved to Views as its headline metric across all content formats. A View counts every time a post appears on screen, including repeat views.

The three ranking signals that matter most in 2026, confirmed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri: watch time, sends per reach (DM shares), and likes per reach. DM shares are three to five times more valuable than likes for reaching new audiences.

If someone sends your content to a friend, the algorithm reads that as a strong signal and pushes it further. Make content people want to forward. That is the benchmark now.

AI Creator labels are being tested

In May 2026, Instagram began testing an account-level “AI Creator” label for accounts that regularly produce AI-generated or AI-assisted content.

This is still in testing, but the direction is clear. The platform is moving toward transparency around AI content. Human-centric posts, face-to-camera moments, and behind-the-scenes footage consistently outperform polished AI-generated visuals.

People follow people. That has not changed. (Are you following me?)

End-to-end encryption for DMs is gone

As of May 8, 2026, Instagram removed its optional end-to-end encrypted direct message feature. Meta’s stated reason is low usage. (Frikkin META!) They are directing users who want encrypted messaging to WhatsApp.

Standard encryption still protects messages in transit, but Meta now has the technical ability to access message content when needed. If you use Instagram DMs for sensitive client communication, this is worth knowing.

Affiliate links are now inside Reels

In April 2026, Instagram confirmed that creators can add affiliate links directly to Reels. Creators tag up to 30 products per video. Viewers tap and purchase without leaving the app. I know for some of my collaborators- this is a BLESSING! SELL YOUR WARES!

For service-based creatives, this is less about selling products and more about what it signals. Instagram is building a closed ecosystem where discovery, trust, and conversion happen in one place. Your presence on the platform carries more weight than it did a year ago. (←READ THAT AGAIN!)

The profile grid is now rectangular

Instagram redesigned the profile grid to a vertical, rectangular format. Story Highlights moved out of the profile header into a separate tab marked by a heart icon.

If your grid was curated for square or horizontal aesthetics, it displays differently now. Worth a look at how your content reads on your profile page.

What stays true

The platform moves fast. The fundamentals do not.

Content that belongs to you and only you travels further than content that could belong to anyone. The algorithms shift, but specificity and consistency are what audiences actually follow.

If you are a working creative with a body of work worth showing, Instagram is still a tool worth using. You just need a strategy that keeps pace with how it actually works.
